Polyphasic Sleep Day Three: On winter and failure

If there’s one thing to be learnt from this, if there’s one lesson that I think could possibly be of relevance to anyone else who decided to attempt this in the same way I am, I think it might be this:

Do not idly lie in bed.

Now, I don’t know about all you American types, but we Australians like to have our winters in the middle of the year. And as you may be aware, it is pretty much smack-bang in the middle of the year at the moment. As a result, it is cold at night. And, unfortunately, I do not have control of the heating in my environment. Continue reading

Polyphasic Sleep Day Two

Apparently, I need a louder alarm.

The long and short of today is that I overslept the 1530 nap. By four hours. The 1930 nap’s alarm was able to wake me, and hence I spent a good hour confused and hungry trying to work out what had happened. It’s unfortunate, but I guess it’s better happening now than happening later down the track.

In better news, I’ve actually started to semi-reliably sleep during the naps. I think. I mean, it’s difficult to tell, really, in a dark room and only over twenty minutes. I doubt any of the naps are REM sleep at this point, though. Continue reading

Polyphasic Sleep Day One

Potential headline: Student pulls all-nighter, writes about it.

So, that “Day One” milestone has passed. For reference, I “started” with the 1130 nap, although this is ultimately due to stuffing up the initial plan of starting at midnight. Doesn’t make much difference in the end, I guess.

As you can probably guess, the day started off fairly normal, as I wasn’t really able to fall asleep quickly enough to loose consciousness during the naps. I’m only really confident that I slept during the 0330 nap. Continue reading

Introductions, Polyphasic Sleep Day Zero

Okay, I guess it’s 10PM on the day before I start this thing. Good as time as any to write up an introduction post. I’ll admit that this was originally going to be a video blog on YouTube or somesuch, but my lack of video equipment made this somewhat of a challenge. That may be a good thing, as it means that you won’t have to listen to my vocal cords express their opinions via my nostrils or watch the zits on my forehead wage war with my skin.

I guess you’ll want to know who I am, though. My name’s James Denholm, and I’m a nineteen-year-old University Student in Australia. I’m a fan of electonica and “indie” music, although certainly not exclusively – flicking through my library shows as much Muse as Daft Punk, as well as LCD Soundsystem rubbing shoulders with the Kaiser Chiefs, Stephen Malkmus and a small band called Dresden. I occasionally play video games, although I suppose the activity would be preformed more often if I didn’t have a Linux machine, though I’m not really complaining. I have a habit of typing long sentences. Continue reading
